Travel During the Hiking Season Sweet-Spots: The Best Time to Visit New Zealand

New Zealand is a stunning country to visit year-round, with each time of the year offering its own unique charm and beauty. If you’re keen to get out on the trails, the best time to visit New Zealand is any time during our hiking season, which runs from October through to April. These months are perfect for exploring without snowy conditions or winter trail closures.

For quieter trails, aim for the shoulder season. October and November (late Spring) and March and April (early Autumn) are some of our favourite months to explore – less busy, still stunning, and full of those “wow” moments.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Spring (October & November): Mild weather, wildflowers in bloom, fewer travellers, and lambs frolicking in the paddocks.
  • Summer (December – February): Warm temperatures and long, sunny days – ideal for getting out on the trails and enjoying our beautiful beaches.
  • Autumn (March & April): Calm settled weather, smaller crowds, and lovely autumn colours.

How to Get Around New Zealand (The Easy Way)

New Zealand might look small on the map, but it often surprises people just how big the country feels and how long it can take to get from A to B. Our beautiful, dramatic landscapes mean that straight roads are rare, and travel times can be longer than expected, especially once you throw in a few photo stops (and trust us, there’ll be plenty).

Renting a car or campervan is a popular option, especially for those looking for flexibility. But it’s not without its challenges. Here in New Zealand we drive on the left-hand side, which can catch visitors off guard. Add in our famously narrow, winding roads, self-driving trips can quickly go from scenic to stressful. If you’re planning a self-drive trip, we recommend doing a bit of research about driving in New Zealand before you go so you know what to expect and can explore safely.

Public transport is an option if you’re not keen on driving, but it can be a bit limiting, especially if you’re hoping to get off the beaten track. Services are quite limited throughout New Zealand, particularly in the South Island, and routes don’t always connect easily. If you’re planning on using public transport to get from one place to the next, just keep in mind it may take a bit of extra planning and coordination.

That’s why we love small-group travel. You get all the benefits of someone else doing the driving without the downsides of a big bus tour or trying to navigate public transport schedules. On a small-group guided tour your local Kiwi guides handle the roads and the daily logistics, while you sit back, soak up the scenery, and enjoy the ride. And along the way, your guides will share stories, history, and those “only a local would know” spots that make the journey from one location to the next not only easy and stress free, but also enjoyable.

Pack Smart – Essentials for your New Zealand Adventure

When it comes to packing for your trip to New Zealand, less really is more. You don’t need a massive suitcase or a mountain of gear. Just the essentials to keep you comfortable and prepared. There’ll be opportunities to do laundry along the way, so no need to overpack.

We’ll send you a detailed packing list before your New Zealand Trails trip, so you’ll know exactly what to bring (and what to leave behind). But here are a few key tips to get you started:

  • Layers are your best friend. New Zealand’s weather can change quickly, so pack lightweight layers you can add or remove as needed. Think light weight hiking pants, merino wool tops, a warm mid-layer, and a quality rain jacket.
  • Comfortable hiking shoes are a must. Mid-height hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip are ideal. Just make sure they’re worn in before your trip, so you’re comfy from day one.
  • Skip the cotton and denim while on the trail. If cotton gets wet, it draws heat away from your body and can feel heavy and uncomfortable. We recommend merino wool or synthetic fabrics for staying comfortable and dry on the trail.
  • Bring a daypack. A comfortable 20–30L daypack is perfect for day hikes and carrying the essentials like snacks, water, an extra layer, and any personal items.
  • Keep it casual. Most days will be spent on the trail so bring clothes that are practical, comfortable, and easy to move in. In the evenings, smart casual is the way to go, but honestly, no one will bat an eye if you rock up to dinner in your trail gear. We’re a relaxed bunch over on this side of the world so there’s no need for anything fancy.
  • Don’t forget the little things. A camera, sunscreen, a sunhat, quality hiking socks, and a swimsuit for the odd dip are all handy to have on hand.

Let Local Experts Take the Pressure Off

With so many incredible places to see and experiences to choose from, planning the ultimate New Zealand adventure can quickly become overwhelming. Sure, you could hire a car, juggle bookings, navigate unfamiliar roads, and try to piece it all together with a stack of guidebooks. But is that really the bucket-list trip you’ve been dreaming of?

That’s where travelling with locals makes all the difference. It takes the pressure off straight away, knowing you’re exploring the country with people who know it inside and out. You’re not just ticking off sights. You’re experiencing New Zealand through the eyes of a local.

Our Kiwi guides know the best spots and the quiet corners most visitors miss. They share their favourite places, their favourite stories, and a genuine slice of Kiwi life along the way. Our local guides aren’t just experts on the trail. They’re walking encyclopaedias of New Zealand life, culture, landscapes, and history, and they love sharing it. They keep everything running smoothly so you can relax and simply enjoy the adventure.

At New Zealand Trails, we’ve spent over a decade perfecting our small-group guided tours. Why Small Group Travel Makes It All Easier

There’s something special about travelling with a small group. You’re not seeing the sights from the window of a large coach bus or following a flag through the crowds. You’re swapping stories over lunch and sharing laughs on the trail. At New Zealand Trails, we keep our groups small and personal (just 12–14 guests), so you can make real connections with your fellow travellers, your guides, and New Zealand.

When you travel with New Zealand Trails, everything’s taken care of so you can focus on the good stuff. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Support every step of the way – questions are welcome, anytime.
  • Sit back and enjoy the views while your expert guides take the wheel.
  • Enjoy hand-picked walks, scenic stops, great accommodation, and seamless transport.
  • Forget Google Maps and juggling reservations, we’ve got it covered.
  • Enjoy our favourite cafés and restaurants, hand-picked by us locals
  • Exclusive access to extraordinary places you won’t find on the main tourist track.
  • The trip of your lifetime!
