Pick the Right Season (Shoulder Season = Fewer People, Great Conditions)
New Zealand’s Seasons at a Glance
If you're coming from the northern hemisphere, keep in mind that our seasons are the opposite of yours:
- Spring: September, October, November
- Summer: December, January, February
- Autumn: March, April, May
- Winter: June, July, August
New Zealand’s main hiking season runs from October through April, covering mid-spring to mid-autumn. It’s the sweet spot for hitting the trails without snowy conditions or winter closures.
Hiking Season Sweet-Spots - The Best Time to Visit New Zealand to Avoid Crowds
If you’re keen to avoid the crowds, aim for the New Zealand shoulder season. These off-peak months offer the same wow-factor views, just with more breathing room. October, November, and early December (our late Spring into early summer) and March and April (our early Autumn) are some of our favourite months for exploring.
October, November, and early December
Spring and early summer is a favourite time for many Kiwis to get out walking. The days are long, trails are quieter, temperatures are mild, and nature is putting on a show. Fresh greenery blankets the hills, lambs bounce around the paddocks, and wildflowers bloom across the country.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildflowers like Mount Cook lilies and lupins growing along the trails and valley floors. It’s a magical time to walk, with quiet tracks and that first buzz of the hiking season in the air.
If you are travelling in Spring, keep an eye out for Mount Cook Lilies while exploring Aoraki Mount Cook National Park
March and April
Autumn in New Zealand is one of the most settled times of year for weather. Think long, sunny days, crisp mornings, and golden foliage that lights up the landscapes.
With fewer visitors around, it's easier to find peace and quiet on even the most popular tracks. You’ll also enjoy milder temperatures – daytime temperatures in March and April typically range between 16–20°C (61–68°F). These comfortable temperatures make March and April an excellent time of year for hiking.
Add in deals on flights and accommodation, and it’s easy to see why March and April are a firm favourite for seasoned travellers.
Use Local Insight to Skip the Crowds
There’s no Google search that can match local know-how. When you’re travelling with the locals, you benefit from years of lived knowledge – when to visit popular spots for that quiet magic, and where to find hidden gems most visitors never discover.
Our New Zealand guided hiking tour itineraries time each day to avoid the busy windows and it’s paced just right – not too rushed, not too slow. Every itinerary is carefully designed to feel effortless. We build in time to linger, to take photos, to enjoy the moment – whether that’s a stunning alpine view, a mirror lake with no one else around, or a tucked viewpoint only the locals know about.
“Truly one of the best trips I have ever taken, everyday was well organized, fun and active. The variety of activities, geography, views and very compatible group were amazing. We thought New Zealand would be a one-time trip but found ourselves talking about another trip before we even got home. Thank you New Zealand Trails for sharing so many special spots and experiences we would never have found or done on our own.”

One of the best ways to avoid the crowds is to get off of the main tourist trail.
Choose Smart Alternatives to Famous Spots (Same Wow, Fewer People)
Here are a few of our favourite ways to experience New Zealand’s best landscapes – without the crowds.
- Milford Sound: Book a morning or afternoon cruise to avoid the midday rush.
- Great Walks: Keen to experience NZ Great Walks like the Kepler or Routeburn but not up for the full multi-day hike? Try a day walk instead – all the scenery, none of the hassle of busy hut bookings.
- Mt Cook National Park: The Hooker Valley Track is a stunner, but it can be very busy. Try Red Tarns or Kea Point instead – both offer impressive alpine vistas, fewer people, and just as many photo ops.
- Rocky Mountain Track - Wānaka: Looking for those breathtaking views over Lake Wanaka without the crowds? Rocky Mountain Track is a great alternative to the very popular Roys Peak Track.
- Paparoa National Park, West Coast: Everyone’s heard of Franz Josef, but much fewer make it to Paparoa. Towering limestone cliffs, lush native bush, and a Jurassic Park vibe make this a stunning stop on your South Island itinerary that’s often left off the tourist trail.
With its towering limestone cliffs and lush vegetation, Paparoa National Park feels like something straight out of Jurassic Park

“AMAZING! We felt so fortunate that we could visit New Zealand and SO glad we picked New Zealand Trails. The trip featured an excellent itinerary but was made extra special by the care, professionalism, and fun provided by our guides Em and Tash. We also had a wonderful group of fellow travellers who were very similar in age, and sharing the experience with them made it all the better. We will treasure the memories from this trip forever. Thank you!”
