Day 1 – Explore Waitomo Caves & Glow worms
Welcome to the North Island, New Zealand's beating, cultural heart. A vibrant and diverse landscape made up of active geothermal areas, immense forests and subterranean wonders. After meeting your guide and fellow travellers in Auckland, we'll head south to explore the hidden depths of Waitomo, marvelling at the limestone formations, crystal tapestries and thousands of glowworms that illuminate the cave system, before continuing on to the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Tongariro National Park region.
Spellbound Waitomo Caves
The first activity of our trip is a truly magical one. We'll visit two vastly different caves and learn all about their formation. Stepping onto a raft, you'll be transported into a unique environment where it seems the night sky is always shining. With glow worms galore you will marvel at the constellations they seem to create. In the next cave, you will slowly wander through whilst gazing at these wonderful creatures that are only found here in New Zealand.
From here we'll continue our journey south, arriving to the shores of Lake Taupo where we’ll spend the night.
Tonight we stay at Braxmere Lodge*

Day 2 – Explore Tongariro National Park
Today we spend the whole day exploring the best parts of Tongariro National Park. We'll wander through the dramatic volcanic landscapes of New Zealand's oldest national park, one that boasts dual World Heritage site status, acknowledged for both its cultural and natural significance.
Hike Tongariro National Park
We'll spend the day on one of our favourite hikes in Tongariro National Park, the Taranaki Falls Track. You'll experience the diverse landscape and learn of the park's history and cultural significance from your expert local guides, with a few short scenic stops along the way to soak it all in.
Later, you'll have free time in Whakapapa Village to relax and take in the mountain views, or, for those wanting to stretch their legs a little further, there's the option of an extra self-guided walk.

Day 3 – Huka Falls & Kohutapu Lodge Māori Cultural Experience
Today we'll journey around Lake Taupo and into the cultural heart of our country. This morning, we'll wander the turquoise waters of Spa Park and the Waikato River on our way to Huka Falls, before heading to Kohutapu Lodge for an afternoon immersed in Māori culture with the Ngāti Manawa tribe.
Hike to Huka Falls
This morning, we'll enjoy a scenic walk beside the powerful Waikato River, taking in the natural geothermal waters of Spa Park before following a well-maintained trail through native bush to the spectacular Huka Falls, with beautiful river views the whole way.
As the Waikato River is forced through a narrow rock chasm, it explodes into Huka Falls, thundering through at an astonishing rate, over 200,000 litres per second in full flow. The turquoise colour comes from tiny air bubbles suspended in the fast moving water, a striking contrast against the surrounding native bush.
Kohutapu Lodge & Tribal Tours Māori Culture Experience
This afternoon, we'll journey deep into the heart of Ngāti Manawa tribal lands for an immersive cultural experience hosted by the Toe Toe whānau at Kohutapu Lodge & Tribal Tours.
Travel through the largest manmade forest in New Zealand to the remote township of Murupara and into ancestral lands rich with history. Visit some of Aotearoa's oldest known Māori rock carvings, carbon dated to over 400 years before the Great Migration. Along the way, gain insight into the history of the region, its people, and the legacy of forestry that has shaped the local community.
You will be formally welcomed onto a traditional marae, where you'll experience a pōwhiri and be hosted by local kaumātua (elders), before stepping inside the ancestral meeting house to hear the stories, values, and traditions of Ngāti Manawa tribe.
With a full afternoon ahead of us, we'll settle in lakeside at Kohutapu Lodge before joining your hosts for a series of interactive cultural workshops, where you may learn about traditional Māori healing practices, weaving, and the meaning and significance of haka through live demonstration and kōrero.
As evening falls, witness the lifting of the hāngī before enjoying a traditional earth cooked feast and dessert, hosted by the whānau, who share their personal story of building Kohutapu Lodge, their connection to this place, and the wider impact of their work within the community.
Tonight, stay on the peaceful shores of Lake Aniwhenua in comfortable lakeside accommodation.

Day 5 – Redwoods, Maungatautari & Finish in Auckland
It may be the last day of your Sweet North trip, but it'll be one to remember. This morning we'll wander among the towering giants of the Redwoods, before heading to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, New Zealand's largest predator free eco sanctuary, home to many of our unique native species. We'll then make our way back to Auckland where we'll say our farewells.
Hike Redwoods Waitawa
This morning we'll enjoy a walk through the world famous Redwood (Whakarewarewa) forest, an incredible environment offering the chance to see the native New Zealand silver fern set amongst some giants of the forest.
Hike Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari Predator Free Sanctuary
This afternoon we'll head to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, a predator free bird sanctuary and New Zealand's largest eco sanctuary, home to many of our precious native species. Keep an eye and ear out for the cheeky kākā, the elusive kōkako, and the friendly pītoitoi (North Island robin), among many other rare birds that call this forest home. There are two ways to experience it here: a more relaxed walk with plenty of time for bird watching, or a longer walk for those wanting to get their hiking fix in before the trip wraps up.
Finish in Auckland
We'll enjoy our last time together on the road back to Auckland, allowing plenty of time to happily reminisce about the last five days. New friends and wonderful experiences have had their share in creating a tonne of memories to last you all the way home and beyond.
This afternoon we’ll drop you at the airport or at your Auckland accommodation. We recommend that you combine this trip with one of our South Island itineraries to enjoy the complete New Zealand experience. The Sweet North trip works particularly well in conjunction with the Pure South, if you're short on time, or any of our longer South Island trips if you really want to leave no stone unturned.
*For logistical reasons, we may make small changes to our itineraries or accommodation from time to time.
